Storytelling

Myths, Legends, Fables, Fantasy, all parts of the world of Story. Stories teach, stories reveal mystery; stories are a part of the world.

We all tell stories every day; what happened on the way to work, who we saw at the weekend, recounting events. The story of our own life. Memories are the stories we tell ourselves.

But in this world of television, books and films, why do we still need Storytelling? To place a story in a film or book is to hold it in time.  It stays there, never moving, always the same.

The words of a book may reveal different things to different people; you may see something in a film the second time round that you missed the first time.

Characters and scenes can be described or seen, but that is the authors’/film-makers’ interpretation of that setting.

Storytelling, allows the story to evolve. It may be the same tale, but with each telling it changes, maybe some parts are no longer needed, maybe something will be added. To tell a story is to bring it to life.

A story can explain how a Hill was made, how a certain pile of stones came to be where it is. Of course, Geology does the same, but with less Giants and Dragons.

When myths are all but forgotten, when there is only a small fragment of a tale, a sniff of legend, I take it and weave it and when the time is right, tell it to the world.
